Park Lane Ledger (Estación de Raíces)
Rafa Sola's Park Lane Ledger (Estación de Raíces) stands at the garden threshold as a storefront for care: a hand-lettered, enamel-coated ledger that both names and nourishes the place. Constructed from salvaged boards and corrugated metal, the work reads like a map of memory — sweeping gold-leaf script, stenciled plant motifs, and small painted vignettes of neighbors who helped reclaim the land. Functioning as sign, bench, and seed-lending cabinet, it makes the garden's civic labor visible and permanent.
Made in workshops with local residents, the piece uses traditional sign-painting techniques—durable enamels, layered finishes, and intentional weathering—to give new materials the dignity of age. An embedded glass-topped seed box and a painted roster invite participation: add a packet, leave a name, take a moment on the bench. Through hand-made lettering, reclaimed materials, and community authorship, the work asserts that public space is not given but grown: held in common, cared for by many hands, and worthy of preservation.

Seen at the garden threshold, Park Lane Ledger (Estación de Raíces) reads like a public elegy and a working notice board at once, and that tension is its greatest success. Rafa Sola turns salvaged boards and corrugated metal into something tender and civic, the gold leaf script and painted vignettes naming neighbors and making memory legible. As a sign, bench, and seed-lending cabinet it is persuasive, an object that asks people to stop, sit, and participate.
The craft here matters. Sola's use of traditional sign-painting techniques, durable enamels, layered finishes, and intentional weathering gives new materials the dignity of age, while the embedded glass-topped seed box and open roster make participation explicit. Workshops and community authorship are not afterthoughts, they are the structural logic of the piece. That lived-in hand, the visible brushstrokes and stenciled plant motifs, create emotional resonance, and they invite more than looking, they invite stewardship.
If the work has a vulnerability it is practical maintenance. Weathering is poetic until names fade, and a seed box needs clear guidelines and gentle oversight to remain generous rather than neglected. A simple upkeep plan, multilingual labels, or periodic repainting by workshop cohorts would protect the Ledger's intentions. Even so, this is public art at its most civic, a small, generous infrastructure that insists public space is grown, not granted.
