The article describes the transformation of disused railway land into a community eco-park. The project restores neglected urban space while combining food production, environmental restoration, arts programming, outdoor play and practical forestry training. It is particularly relevant to reclamation of neglected spaces, community-led preservation and mentorship or skills transmission because the site is designed not only as a public amenity but also as a place where people can learn and practice land-based skills.
Estación de Raíces
Estación de Raíces is a site-specific public artwork and living workshop that reimagines a disused rail corridor as a classroom, kitchen garden, and commons. Rafa Sola and community apprentices transformed the linear footprint into a sequence of functional vignettes: hand-painted enamel signposts that double as instruction panels, raised beds made from reclaimed sleepers, and a long-weathered mural that maps seasonal cycles and neighborhood memories. Each sign is finished with salt-cure stabilizers and gold-leaf accents—durable, legible, and intentionally beautiful—so that practical guidance reads with the dignity of public lettering.
The piece foregrounds reclamation and mentorship: weekend workshops teach grafting, seed saving, and timber joinery; young people practice forestry training on labeled tool benches; elders contribute oral histories that are hand-stenciled into planters. Visitors encounter equal measures of food production, environmental restoration, and playful infrastructure—balanced beams for children, quiet groves for pollinators, and communal tables for shared harvests. The work insists that public lettering and quotidian craft can hold memory, pass on skills, and turn neglected space into a living archive of labor and care.

Walking through Estación de Raíces feels like stepping into a slow, public lesson where every object is both tool and text. Rafa Sola and his apprentices have braided practical craft with civic poetry, turning a derelict rail corridor into a sequence of functional vignettes. The hand painted enamel signposts, raised beds of reclaimed sleepers, and the long-weathered mural that maps seasons and memories read together as a map for everyday resilience, not a monument to spectacle.
What makes the project sing is the insistence on legibility, durability, and ceremony. The signs are finished with salt-cure stabilizers and gold leaf accents, so instructions hold up as public lettering with dignity. Weekend workshops in grafting, seed saving, and timber joinery are not window dressing, they are the program. Young people practice forestry on labeled benches, elders see their oral histories stenciled into planters, and play structures and pollinator groves coexist with communal tables. The work balances food production, environmental restoration, and social infrastructure in a way that feels tactile and teachable, like a manual you want to live in.
My questions are practical, not aesthetic. Who pays for long term maintenance, and how will the project resist being recast as a charming asset that accelerates displacement? Language and accessibility for non Spanish readers could be considered more deliberately, and there are inevitable tensions between informal apprenticeship models and labor protections. Still, as a piece of social practice the work is generous, accessible, and emotionally resonant. It models how signage, craft, and care can make public space teachable, and that alone makes Estación de Raíces a quiet, necessary success.
