This piece centers on **urban survival in the era of extreme heat**, framing heat waves as one of the most lethal climate risks for city dwellers.[27] Brian Stone explains that only one city so far has reached a combined temperature-and-humidity level that crosses the survivability threshold, but many are approaching it, making adaptation urgent rather than hypothetical.[27] He describes how dense, paved environments trap heat, disproportionately affecting low‑income residents and outdoor workers who have limited access to cooling.[27] The article explores a toolkit of resilience measures: expanding tree canopy and cool roofs to lower neighborhood temperatures; redesigning building codes so homes can remain habitable during blackouts; and establishing public cooling centers as critical social infrastructure.[27] Stone also emphasizes the need for **data‑driven early warning systems**, citywide heat vulnerability mapping, and policies that protect tenants from extreme indoor heat—connecting to wider moves in Arizona and other jurisdictions to treat excessive indoor temperatures as a housing violation.[19][27] Throughout, the story highlights how urban resilience is not only a technical challenge but a governance and equity issue: survival in future summers will depend on whether cities embed climate resilience into budgets and land‑use decisions rather than treating it as an add‑on.[17][19][27]
El Libro Térmico (The Thermal Ledger)
In El Libro Térmico (The Thermal Ledger) I stitch together the city's visible detritus into a public manual for survival. Panels of reclaimed doors and corrugated metal carry a hand-lettered heat-index map—stenciled dots of enamel that read like a topographic chart of vulnerability. Portrait vignettes of outdoor workers and tenants are silkscreened in white over blistered orange fields; stenciled headlines propose practical fixes—tree canopy now, cool roofs, tenant protections—rendered in bold hand-lettering and gold-leaf accents that catch the gallery light like municipal signage. Functional objects—the painted QR-code, a small wooden “Cooling Centers” mailbox, inset ventilation grates—invite visitors to engage: scan for neighborhood resources, deposit notes about local cooling needs, or simply stand beneath the reflected silver panels that mimic a cool roof.
This is a piece born from workshops at La Lonja and the Muelle 7 Kiosk Studio, where neighbors and former street youth helped mix paints and lay the map. It treats data not as distant charts but as a legible, human record: the enamel map encodes heat-risk, while the layered found materials record who will be pushed hardest. The work argues that heat resilience must be stitched into budgets, building codes, and tenant rights—policy as craft. I signed it with the harbor curl my mentor taught me; it’s both an index and an instruction: a public ledger for a city learning how to survive its summers.

As a piece of formal thinking about urgency, El Libro Térmico (The Thermal Ledger) organizes found detritus into a rigorously composed grid that reads as a map and as a storefront facade. Panels of reclaimed doors and corrugated metal establish a modular rhythm, while the halftone dots of enamel convert meteorology into a Color Field of risk, moving from blistered orange to soot-dark blue. The limited palette is deliberate, the surfaces disciplined, and the gold leaf accents act not as decoration but as a punctum, catching gallery light and converting municipal language into visual emphasis. The work stages a tension between matte enamel and reflective silver, which is both optical and programmatic, a shorthand for heat and cooling in bodily terms.
Technically the piece is anchored in a lineage of sign painting and public lettering, evident in the precise hand-lettering, stenciled headlines, and silkscreened portraits. The white vignette faces float like ghosts over the orange fields, registering presence without portraiture that would individualize suffering. Functional objects, the painted QR code and the wooden Cooling Centers mailbox, move the work from tableau to tool, inviting civic exchange and making the gallery a node in an urban information network. This is social-practice work that retains material rigor, every brush mark legible, every panel doing double duty as form and instruction.
Contextually the project translates the technical language of heat vulnerability into a legible, human ledger. It is an artwork that insists policy must be tactile, not merely additive, proposing tree canopy, cool roofs, tenant protections as craftable interventions. My reservation is formal, not moral, the piece sometimes flirts with didactic clarity at the expense of formal ambiguity, and a gallery setting may domesticate its urgency. Yet as a visual argument it is persuasive, an instance where aesthetic discipline amplifies civic demand rather than neutralizing it.
